May 2nd: an early harvest of red lettuce! (Zone 6b)
This lettuce was planted the previous fall, grown to this size, and overwintered with NO frost damage!
How? Buried in straw for insulation, and planted on the south side of a concrete block wall: the concrete absorbs warmth from the sun during the day and slowly releases it at night.
